Volunteer Speedway and Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series unable to work out ‘Scorcher’ reschedule date

BULLS GAP, Tenn. — Officials with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and Volunteer Speedway owners Joe and Phyllis Loven attempted to reschedule running of the 12th annual Scorcher, which fell victim to rain on Aug. 20. But with the series schedule going ahead into fall, along with the crown jewel World 100 coming up the weekend of Sept. 11-12 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, no weekend was available.

Sept. 18-19 at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway, Sept. 24-26 at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway for the Knoxville Nationals, Oct. 3-4 in Georgia at Dixie Speedway and Rome Speedway, with Oct. 16-17 at Portsmouth (Ohio) Raceway for the Dirt Track World Championship, will close out the 2015 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to Volunteer Speedway in August 2016 for the Scorcher.

Photos taken at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19 show the saturated infield pits at Volunteer Speedway. Besides water standing in the infield, on both ends of the track in turns one and two, and turns three and four – the heavy rain on Wednesday washed gullies down the steep banking. And with more rain overnight, it’s just impossible to be able and get a 34,000 pound grader out onto the track surface to grade and prepare the racing surface when it’s “mud.” Plus the National Weather Service forecast on Thursday shows 70 percent chance of additional rain. So running of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series 12th annual Scorcher has been postponed for Thursday, Aug. 20.
