Hill shines in capturing Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series $4,000 victory at Volunteer Speedway
BULLS GAP, Tenn. (Aug. 30, 2025) – Vic Hill “thrilled” Volunteer Speedway fans by capturing the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series $4,000 Labor Day Shootout victory Saturday night.
Hill, from Mosheim, is the only five-time Super Late Model track champion at “The Gap,” but it had been several years since the 62-year-old veteran had parked in victory lane.
Jimmy Owens and Cory Hedgecock led the 22-car field to green from the front row, with Hedgecock taking the lead over Owens on the opening lap. Behind them drivers were jockeying for real estate running two- and three-wide around the high banks.
Following a caution on lap 20, Hill got the best of Hedgecock off a restart to take a lead he never would relinquish. Hedgecock and Owens battled before the early leader dropped out.
With Hill clicking off perfect laps out front, behind him eyes were focused on the heated battle for the runner-up position between Owens and Forrest Trent. Over the final eight circuits, Owens and Trent had fans standing on their feet cheering as they threw slide-jobs on each other in the corners.
Hill recorded the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series victory over Owens, Trent, Josh Henry and Jensen Ford.
Completing the top 10 finishers were Michael Brown, Beckham Malone, Billy Franklin, Alex Vance and Karl Tipton.
Jesse Helton, welcome back to victory lane at Volunteer Speedway. Helton, from Rogersville, is a former Hobby Stock track champion and also Late Model winner. He worked for dirt racing legend Scott Bloomquist and John Blankenship for close to a decade and was out of the driver’s seat. … Recently Shane McDowell (Shane McDowell Racing owner with driver Dale McDowell) had been working on the car helping Helton get ready to race.
Helton, driving for car owner Tony Jones, captured the Sportsman Late Model $1,000 feature win. Helton was chased to the checkered flag by Wes Tilley (Andersonville), Tim Maupin (Johnson City), Heath Alvey (Dandridge) and Jody Horton (Sneedville).
Pierce McCarter of Seymour led flag-to-flag in capturing the Open Wheel Modified $1,000 feature win over Jesse Rupe (Sophia, W.Va), Kaleb Trent (Rogersville), Reece Ogle (Gatlinburg) and Dale Ball (Johnson City).
Colby Long of Morristown set fast time in qualifying to earn pole starting position for the 20-lap Street Stock feature. The third generation racer grabbed early lead and never looked back in capturing the victory over Josh Ayers (Landrum, S.C.), Dylan Hannah (Clyde, N.C.), McKenlee Hall (Morristown) and Ryan Watson (Sevierville).
James Burnette of Knoxville recorded the Front Wheel Drive feature win over Jackson Crawford (Rogersville), Danny Sandiford (Sevierville), Anthony Ferrell (Whitesburg) and Jacob Anderson (Knoxville).
