Volunteer Speedway remembers longtime racer Rusty Bryant

BULLS GAP, Tenn. — Volunteer Speedway would like to extend condolences to the family of Rusty Bryant upon his unexpected passing. Bryant parked in victory lane at “The Gap” on many occasions over the years.

Bryant, 55, a native of Newport, Tenn., passed away Friday, Dec. 29, 2017 from injuries sustained in a highway accident. He had resided in southeast Kentucky the past several years.

Bryant was a well known dirt-track racer around East Tennessee for several years, having competed at Volunteer Speedway, and both Newport Speedway and Kingsport Speedway when those two tracks were dirt. Bryant raced in the 6-Cylinder, Late Model and Open Wheel Modified divisions. He also raced on asphalt in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series for a while at Asheville (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

The Bryant family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018 at Manes Funeral Home in Newport. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018 in Manes Funeral Home chapel, with Brother Ben Watts officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. … www.ManesFuneralHome.com
