Byrd, Horton, Clark, Stevens, Miracle, Bristol park in victory lane at ‘The Gap’

BULLS GAP, Tenn. (July 20, 2019) — Tim Byrd, Jody Horton, David Clark, John Stevens, Jonathan Miracle and Tim Bristol all visited victory lane Saturday at Volunteer Speedway.

Tim Byrd of Jonesborough was fastest in Crate Late Model qualifying at 12.959 seconds. He and Gary Crittenden brought the 16-car field to the start alongside one another from the front row. Byrd jumped out to the lead over Crittenden, Tim Maupin, Bobby Mays and Tyler Arrington.

Just outside of the top five Jordon Horton, Tyler Smith, Rusty Webb, Adam Tolliver, Ross White, Mike Smith and Taylor Coffman were battling for position. Maupin got around Crittenden for the second spot in the early going while Mays and Arrington mixed it up. Maupin closed in behind leader Byrd in the corners, but Byrd smashed the loud pedal down the straightaway to maintain his advantage.

Caution waved on lap 24 when Crittenden, Mays, Horton and Mike Smith tangled between turns three and four, with Smith flipping at exit onto the front straightaway to bring out the red flag for emergency and track personnel to quickly get on the scene. To applause from the fans, Smith climbed from his badly damaged machine uninjured.

Back under green over the final six laps, Byrd held off the hard-charging Maupin for his second straight win. Horton, Arrington and White rounded out the top five at the checkered flag.

Jody Horton of Sneedville was fastest in Sportsman Late Model qualifying over 27 fellow competitors at 13.236 seconds, and he backed his speed up from time trials by leading all 25 laps to capture his first win of the season. Horton and Clyde Overholt led the 23-car field to green from the front row, with Horton powering out into the lead over Overholt, Rex Coffey, Warren McMahan and Chris Coffey.

McMahan, Vic Chandler and Chris Long dropped out while running in the top 10 early. Rex Coffey stuck his nose underneath Horton in the corners on several occasions, but was unable to complete the pass for lead. However, there would be no denying Horton a trip to victory lane as he won over Rex Coffey, Chris Coffey, James Parrott and Chris Raines.

David Clark of Tazewell captured his division-leading fourth Modified Street win over Eric Hux, Shannon Emery, Wayne Rader and Nick Presley. Apparent second place finisher Gary Blanken failed post-race technical inspection when the wheelbase on his car was determined to not meet specifications.

John Stevens of Wallins Creek, Ky., outran Quincy Arnwine, Charles Bates, Kenny Helton and Chuck Kilian to record the Classic feature win.

Jonathan Miracle of Tazewell received, well, “a miracle” when apparent Street Stock winner Chris Brady refused to allow his race car to go through post-race technical inspection. Miracle was awarded the win, with Tony Trent, and Tony Trent, Jason Leatherwood and Austin Lefevers rounding out the top five finishers.

Tim Bristol of Morganton, N.C., recorded the Mini Stock win over Chris Evans, Chad Manning, Travis Cody and Greg Everhart.

Another action-packed six division racing program is scheduled next Saturday, July 27 at Volunteer Speedway. For more information you may call the track office at (423) 235-5020, visit the website at www.VolunteerSpeedway.com or contact General Manager at (423) 676-9080.
