Asphalt late models on Dirt event set for March 17 to be rescheduled

Asphalt late models on Dirt event set for March 17 to be rescheduled BULLS GAP, Tenn. — Due to surrounding asphalt tracks and touring series starting their season in March, Volunteer Speedway management has postponed the asphalt late models on dirt event, originally scheduled as part of the Spring Thaw on Saturday, March 17, until later in the fall. Several top late model teams in the surrounding area expressed interest, but due to a lot of teams’ budgets and lack of timing we figure it’s best to wait until the latter part of the 2012 season to give these teams and tracks time to end their seasons. With the overwhelming amount of interest we’ve had, we are definitely going to reschedule this event. For more information, contact the track office Monday through Friday during business hours (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.).

November 12, 2011 – Volunteer Speedway recognizes 2011 champions at ‘Points Party’

Volunteer Speedway recognizes 2011 champions at ‘Points Party’ By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (Nov. 12) — Points money and other contingency awards were doled out to drivers’ Saturday at Volunteer Speedway’s 2011 “Points Party at The Gap.” Dale Ball, of Johnson City, has been racing since he was a 14-year-old teenager attending David Crockett High School in Jonesborough back in the 1970s. The 2011 racing season at Volunteer Speedway marked Ball’s 36th year strapped in behind the wheel of a race car. Throughout the years he’s won Late Model track championships at both Kingsport Speedway and Newport Speedway. But his greatest accomplishments have happened racing on the high banks at The Gap, where Ball has visited victory lane in 6-Cylinder, Open Wheel Modified, Crate Late Model and Super Late Model competition. Ball captured the 1999 Super Late Model title, to join his late father (Walter Ball – 1977 champion) as the only father-son duo to ever win Late Model championships at Volunteer Speedway. Ball won Pro (Crate) Late Model titles in 2008 and 2010. Ball stormed out of the gate to open the 2011 season up with three straight feature wins, and he never looked back. Driving the Smith Brothers Harley-Davidson of Johnson City/Luke’s Pizza of Johnson City/Alan Poyner Enterprises/Mainline Communications/Jim Schweitzer Inc./Twin D Auto & Truck Sales of Johnson City/Steve Williams Enterprises/Advance Auto Parts/Envy Suspension & Race Consultants/Warrior Race Cars/No. 2 Chevrolet Impala – Ball earned five pole awards and recorded nine top-5 finishes and six feature wins en route to recording his third Fastrak Racing Series-sanctioned Pro (Crate) Late Model track championship over the past four seasons. Rounding out the top five in points behind Ball were Jerry Broyles of Jonesborough, Ricky Moore of Mosheim, Todd Brooks of Greeneville, and Mike Smith of Rogersville. Entering the 2011 racing season, Jamie Whitt of Wise, Va., set a goal of repeating his 2010 championship campaign when he recorded the Hobby Stock title. The 45-year-old Whitt got off to a good start by winning the first two races. Overall on the season, while driving the Norton (Va.) Auto Supply/B&D Repair/Baldwin Filters/Iron Horse Race Cars/No. 1 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Whitt earned six pole awards, recorded eight top-5 finishes and four feature wins to capture his second consecutive “Gunslingers of Kingsport” Hobby Stock championship. Rounding out the top five in points behind Whitt were Shannon Davidson of Mooresburg, Dale Reed of Whitesburg, Dustin Shaver of Morristown, and Sue Curl of Erwin. Bulls Gap’s Jesse Wilder opened the season with a third-place finish, followed by a runner-up effort in Road Warrior action. The third time out proved to be the charm for the 27-year-old East Tennessee State University Engineering graduate, as he visited victory lane for the first time ever in his racing career. Wilder decided he liked the checkerboard real estate so much he went on to win two more races (won three straight) during the season en route to capturing the Road Warrior championship, while driving the Greeneville...

October 22, 2011 – Connor rolls to Volunteer Speedway victory; Pegher celebrates as Fastrak Racing Series ‘Grand Nationals’ champion

Connor rolls to Volunteer Speedway victory; Pegher celebrates as Fastrak Racing Series ‘Grand Nationals’ champion By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (Oct. 22) — Following Friday night’s opener of the 2011 Fastrak Racing Series Pro Late Model $250,000 Grand Nationals at Volunteer Speedway, Brian Connor of Martinez, Ga., was a man on a mission Saturday night at “The Gap” because he felt like he had let one slip away. Connor led Friday’s event until just past the halfway point before allowing Lee Cooper to get around him on a restart, and once out front Cooper cruised to victory. Connor decided to do a little house-cleaning Saturday, bringing out the broom to pull off the “clean-sweep.” For the second straight night, Connor paced the field during Shell Racing Solutions Top Gun Time Trials. He then proceeded to win the first heat and, more impressively led flag-to-flag to record the 50-lap main event Pro Late Model feature victory. But without a doubt the driver with the biggest smile on his face at the conclusion of the race was Mike Pegher Jr. of Cranberry Township, Pa., as he captured the 2011 Fastrak Racing Series Pro Late Model Grand Nationals championship worth $30,000 from the $250,000 point fund. Besides Connor winning a heat race, others were Greer, S.C.’s Cooper, Jensen Ford of Piney Flats, Tenn., and Pegher. David Smith of Inman, S.C., and Dan Angelicchio of New Stanton, Pa., won the B-mains. Pegher stood atop the Grand Nationals point leaderboard entering the final night, and following his victory in the fourth heat race he stood primed-and-ready to capture the $30,000 for winning the Fastrak Racing Series Pro Late Model national championship. Connor and Cooper brought the 24-car field to the green flag, and the duo raced side-by-side down the front straightaway into the first turn. But Connor assumed the point racing off turn two down the backstretch, followed by Cooper, Ford, Pegher and David Watts. Rob Blair quickly moved up from his eighth-place starting position to pass Watts for the fifth spot racing off the fourth turn on lap 5. With the race running clean-and-green and Connor setting sail out front, he caught the tail of the field to begin lapping cars on the 15th circuit. With Connor methodically picking off the slower cars, Cooper narrowed the distance between himself and Connor to four car lengths. Ford lost a couple of positions when both Pegher and Blair got around him, dropping Ford back into the fifth spot. Just outside the top-five in the running order Watts, Blake Bentley, Daniel Baggerly, Brandon Umberger, Kenny Peeples Jr., Bobby Mays and Ryan Atkins were battling for position around the East Tennessee high-banked oval. The caution waved on lap 23 when Dan Angelicchio looped his car in turn two. Connor chose the inside on the double-file restart which put Cooper on the outside of row one. Directly behind them were Pegher and Blair in the second row. Back up to speed Connor was still...

October 21, 2011 – Cooper streaks to Volunteer Speedway Fastrak Racing Series ‘Grand Nationals’ victory

Cooper streaks to Volunteer Speedway Fastrak Racing Series ‘Grand Nationals’ victory By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (Oct. 21) — Lee Cooper of Greer, S.C., has three Fastrak Racing Series Pro Late Model regional touring championships to his credit, but his sights this weekend in East Tennessee are set much higher – winning the $250,000 Grand Nationals at Volunteer Speedway and pocketing the $30,000 champion’s payout. With 40 Fastrak Racing Pro Late Models representing nine states in attendance at “The Gap” for Shell Racing Solutions Top Gun Time Trials, Brian Connor of Martinez, Ga., was quickest with a lap at 13.780 seconds. Winning the four respective heat races were Connor, Johnson City, Tenn.’s Dale Ball, Daniel Baggerly of Rural Retreat, Va., and Cooper. Steve Hendren of Rutherfordton, N.C., and fellow Tar Heel state racer Ryan Atkins of Mount Airy won the B-mains. Connor and Ball led the stellar 24-car field to the green flag, with Connor grabbing the lead over Ball on the opening lap racing off turn two, with Cooper, Baggerly and Vic Chandler in tow. Cooper got around Ball to move into second racing off the fourth turn on lap 3, and just two circuits later the event’s first caution waved when Wisconsin chauffeur David Fieber’s engine went up in smoke entering the first turn. Connor chose the inside and Cooper the outside of row one for the double-file restart, and back up to speed Connor powered back into the lead over Cooper and Ball. At the end of the backstretch racing into turn three on lap 7, Mike Smith got to the inside of Chandler to take over the fifth spot, and with the door open Jensen Ford waltzed right in and moved to sixth, dropping Chandler back into seventh place. The caution waved on lap 12, when Matt Long slowed at end of the front straightaway with a flat left-rear tire. On the ensuing restart, several cars including Chandler, David Watts, Mike Smith, Dan Angelicchio, Ryan Montgomery, Brandon Umberger, Jerry Broyles, Ryan Atkins, Bobby Whitling, Blake Bentley and Josh Holtgraver got together in turn two and wrecked to immediately see the yellow wave once more. All continued with damaged sheet-metal except for Chandler, Smith and Broyles, who saw their race end parked in the pits. Back under green Connor still was showing the way out front over Cooper, Ball, Baggerly and the hard-charging Mike Pegher Jr. Hendren used the high-line to get around Kenny Peeples Jr. between turns three and four on lap 18 to move into sixth in the running order. A strong fourth-place run for Baggerly ended in disappointment when his car experienced driveline issues and slowed to a stop on the backstretch on lap 26 to bring out the caution. With the green flag waving Connor and Cooper raced off into the first turn, but carrying the momentum off the high-side exiting turn two onto the backstretch, Cooper powered into the lead on lap 26 over Connor. The caution...

September 10, 2011 – Cook knocks out competition for Volunteer Speedway ‘Tennessee vs. Carolina Brawl’ Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series $5,000 victory

Cook knocks out competition for Volunteer Speedway ‘Tennessee vs. Carolina Brawl’ Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series $5,000 victory By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (Sept. 10) — With the feel of fall in the air around East Tennessee on Saturday night, Volunteer Speedway hosted round two of the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series “Tennessee vs. Carolina Brawl – Saturday Night Fight @ The Gap.” Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., proved to be the ultimate warrior as he knocked out the competition by first, setting fast-time at 12.385 seconds and then secondly, leading all 60 laps to record the $5,000 victory and capturing the impressive championship title belt. Cook bolted out of the gate at drop of the green, taking the lead over 15-year-old Zack Mitchell, Ross Bailes, Mark Douglas and Jonathan Davenport. With Cook setting a blistering pace out front leading the 24-car field around the high-banked, 4/10-mile oval, the first caution waved on lap 8 when series points leader Luke Roffers and Jay Sessoms tangled on the front straightaway about the start-finish line and spun down against the inside wall. Following the restart, Cook once again began to put some distance between himself and his closest challengers – Mitchell, Bailes, Douglas and Davenport. Cook caught the tail of the field and was faced with working lapped traffic on lap 20, but the veteran chauffeur maneuvered his way past cars with the skills of a surgeon. Chad Ogle was having a strong run in sixth, riding on Davenport’s rear bumper. Just back behind Ogle, Johnny Pursley, Ricky Weeks, Kennie Compton Jr., Tim Allen, Dennis Franklin, Dustin Mitchell, Jeff Maupin and Brett Miller were all battling for real estate. After Maupin had just gotten around Miller for 13th-place on lap 21 between turns three and four, on lap 23 racing into the first turn Maupin attempted a slide job under Dustin Mitchell – but instead contact was made and Maupin spun between turns one and two to bring the caution out. Back under green for just three circuits, on lap 26 fourth-running Douglas saw his night come to a disappointing end when he got high between (turns) one and two and hit the wall. Then on lap 29 the caution waved once again when Travis Yow spun. Cook brought the field back up to speed and glued to his rear bumper was Davenport, who had gotten around both Bailes and Zack Mitchell for positions. The chilled grandstand crowd was hoping to see a battle up front between Cook and Davenport for the lead, but Cook put a quick end to those thoughts as he left Davenport and Bailes to duel for the runner-up spot. With the race running “clean-and-green” for the entire second half of the 60-lapper, Cook continued to build on his advantage. While Cook was in command out front, he did encounter a few tense moments late in the race when negotiating lapped traffic just 10 circuits from the finish. That briefly allowed...

August 25, 2011 – Owens blisters field for $10,000 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Reece Monument Co. ‘Scorcher’ victory at Volunteer Speedway

Owens blisters field for $10,000 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Reece Monument Co. ‘Scorcher’ victory at Volunteer Speedway BULLS GAP, Tenn. (Aug. 25) — Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN took the lead from Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA on lap 42 and led the rest of the way to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series “Scorcher 50” presented by Reece Monument Co. on Thursday night at Volunteer Speedway. McDowell finished second followed by Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN; Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN; and John Blankenship of Williamson, WV. McDowell took the lead at the start of the $10,000 to win race. Owens slipped to third on the opening lap. O’Neal moved into second to challenge McDowell early on, but Owens passed O’Neal for second on lap 15. With only one caution flag to slow the action, when Mark Douglas slowed high between turns one and two with a flat tire on lap 16, once back under green flag racing McDowell and Owens then had a terrific two-car race for the lead before the tremendous crowd that was on hand to witness the event. Owens stalked McDowell for several laps until he dove underneath of McDowell at the flag stand to complete lap 41. Owens then took the lead heading into turn number one. Owens raced through heavy lapped traffic as he went on to score his sixth series win of 2011, thus extending his series points lead over Bloomquist to 180. “It’s always good to win here at Volunteer Speedway, this is where it all started for me in racing driving a Street Stock many years ago,” said Owens in victory lane. “My car owner is here, Mike Reece, and he sponsored the race, which makes it even more amazing to be able to bring home the win for him. Dale (McDowell) had a real good car tonight. We slipped up there in turn four on the first lap, but we got it back in line and ran down (Don) O’Neal and then had a really great race with Dale for the lead.” “The track was really racy tonight, you could run anywhere on it. There were some issues a few times with lapped cars, but we just took our time and we were fortunate enough to get by Dale. He’s had a tough year and I’m sure he is trying hard to get that first win. Thanks to everybody for coming out tonight, I hope they enjoyed the show.” Owens drives a Bloomquist Race Cars Ford sponsored by Reece Monument Company, Gantte Appraisals, Midwest Sheet Metal, Red Line Oil, VP Race Fuels, Hoosier Racing Tires and is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine. McDowell in one of his best runs of the year was grateful for his second place finish. “We are thrilled with second; Jimmy had the best car tonight. We led for a long time, and I thought maybe with my car owner (NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer) in the house...

August 6, 2011 – Douglas leads flag-to-flag for $3,000 Volunteer Racing Series victory at ‘The Gap’

Douglas leads flag-to-flag for $3,000 Volunteer Racing Series victory at ‘The Gap’ By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (Aug. 6) — The always popular Fan Appreciation Night proved once again to be an overwhelming success Saturday at Volunteer Speedway. The Short Track Auto Racing Series / Volunteer Racing Series made their first-ever visit to the high-banked track for running of the $3,000-to-win “Back To School Bash 40,” and when the checkered flag waved two-time (2002 and ’03) Super Late Model track Mark Douglas of Knoxville was celebrating in victory lane after leading from start-to-finish. After setting fast-time in qualifying, Douglas jumped into the lead from pole position at waving of the green flag over Eric Jacobsen and Vic Hill. The event’s first caution appeared only two laps in when Kerry Jones slowed to a stop on the bottom of track between turns one and two. Douglas was all alone out front for the Delaware double-file restart, with Jacobsen and Hill side-by-side behind him. Immediately back under green, between turns one and two Hill moved into second place. While Hill set his sights on the leader Douglas, Jacobsen began to feel some pressure from fourth-running Chad Ogle. With the race running clean-and-green and the front-runners setting a blistering pace, at the halfway point Douglas held a three car length advantage over Hill, with Jacobsen and Ogle about eight car lengths back. Hill began turning up the heat on Douglas looking to move out front, sticking the nose of his car underneath Douglas racing off the corners on several occasions. But Douglas would continually power back ahead of Hill racing down the straightaway. Hill kept applying pressure hoping Douglas would make a mistake to allow him to seize the moment and take the lead, but the veteran Douglas ran perfect laps and never opened the door for Hill to capitalize. Jeff Maupin got up high between turns one and two jumping the cushion to make slight contact with the wall on lap 36 to bring out the caution flag, thus setting up a four-lap dash to the checkers. Waiting for the green flag to wave, Hill looked to mount one last serious charge to overtake Douglas for the point. But Douglas, driving the C. Finishing third through fifth, respectively, were Jacobsen, Ogle and Ross White. Completing the top-10 finishers were Brett Miller, John Tweed, Hunter Best, Maupin and Bryan Hendrix.
July 22, 2011 – Madden cruises to $5,300 Volunteer Speedway ‘Southern Nationals’ victory

Madden cruises to $5,300 Volunteer Speedway ‘Southern Nationals’ victory By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (July 22) — There may be one more event remaining in the 2011 Ray Cook-promoted Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series, which features 10 Super Late Model races across the Southeast in the span of 13 days. But you can go ahead and write the champion’s check to Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., after he led flag-to-flag Friday night at Volunteer Speedway to capture his series-leading third victory, a win worth $5,300. Should Madden pull off the series finale victory Saturday at Tazewell Speedway, it will be a clean-sweep in the Volunteer State, following back-to-back wins at Cleveland Speedway and “The Gap.” Madden began the evening touring the high banks at 12.394 seconds to earn the pole position for the 53-lap main event presented by East Tennessee Masonry Supply of Kingsport, with Mark Douglas and Tommy Kerr each winning B-mains. Madden jumped into the lead over Eric Jacobsen, Stacy Boles, John Pursley Jr. and Vic Hill to complete the opening lap. Quickly on the move was current Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) point leader Ty Dillon, grandson of legendary NASCAR race team owner Richard Childress, who advanced from his seventh starting position to overtake Hill for fifth in the running order on lap 3 racing into the first turn. Dillon got around Pursley Jr. to move into the fourth spot on lap 8 racing off the fourth turn. Just one circuit later caution waved when Hill spun in turn four. Madden was trailed by Jacobsen, Boles, Dillon and Pursley Jr. on the restart. While Madden and Jacobsen began to put a little room between themselves and their closest challengers, Dillon was all over Boles wanting the third spot. Dillon got under Boles racing between turns three and four on lap 14, and racing off the corner Dillon powered his way into third. A strong run inside the top-five ended for Pursley Jr. when he slowed racing off the fourth turn on lap 23 and dropped down to the inside and coasted down the front straightaway and around the bottom of the track between turns one and two before entering the infield pits. With the race reaching the halfway point, the front-running trio of Madden, Jacobsen and Dillon had pulled ahead of fourth- and fifth-running Boles and Billy Ogle Jr. by about three-quarters of a straightaway. While Jacobsen and Dillon got to battling for the runner-up position, Madden began distancing himself from the duo. Lap-after-lap, Dillon would get under Jacobsen in the corners only to see Jacobsen power back ahead racing down the straightaways. The last thing leader Madden wanted to see was a caution flag, yet that’s what happened on lap 39 when Tony Knowles slowed with a flat tire to erase Madden’s advantage over Jacobsen and Dillon.
