Ball rolls to Pro Late Model sweep Saturday at Volunteer Speedway

Ball rolls to Pro Late Model sweep Saturday at Volunteer Speedway By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (May 12) — Twin features for the Fastrak Racing Series-sanctioned Pro Late Model division headlined the racing program Saturday at Volunteer Speedway. Dale Ball of Johnson City, with Pro Late Model championships to his credit in 2008, 2010 and 2011 – and currently perched atop the points leader-board in attempt to make it a three-peat, pulled off a clean sweep as he parked in victory lane following each race bringing his win total to three this season. Fast-qualifier Mike Smith and outside front-row starter Ricky Moore brought the 17-car field to green in the first 20-lap event. On the opening lap racing down the backstretch into the third turn, third-starting Ball dove to the bottom of the track to make it three-wide with Smith and Moore between turns three and four in a battle for the lead. Racing up off the fourth turn, Ball moved into the lead over Smith and Moore. Even though Smith, Jerry Broyles and Moore stayed in contention, Ball, driving the Smith Brothers Harley-Davidson of Johnson City/Kerry Jones Trucking – Bigfoot Enterprises/Luke’s Pizza of Johnson City/Alan Poyner Enterprises/Jim Schweitzer Inc./Mainline Communications/Twin D Auto & Truck Sales of Johnson City/Advance Auto Parts/Envy Suspension & Race Consultants/VP Racing Fuels/Steve Williams Enterprises/Warrior Race Cars/No. 2 Chevrolet Camaro, would not be denied victory as he was chased to the checkers by Smith, Broyles, Moore and Todd Brooks. Completing the top-10 finishers were Tim Byrd, James Cole, Brad Coffey, Chris Chandler and Tim Maupin. Vic Chandler and Ball started the second 20-lapper from the front row, with Ball grabbing the lead racing off turn two on the opening lap over Vic Chandler and Moore. Riding a strong mount, Moore got under Vic Chandler for the runner-up position on lap 4 racing off the fourth turn and set his sights on race leader Ball. John Tweed passed Chris Chandler for the fifth spot on lap 7 racing off the second corner. Showing the way out front, Ball clicked off consistent laps without making a bobble en route to his second win on the night over Moore, Vic Chandler, Tweed and Broyles. Completing the top-10 finishers were Maupin, John Harrell, Byrd, Chris Chandler and Brooks. Longtime racing veteran Jon Cook of Jonesborough jumped into the lead over Jamie Whitt, Shannon Emery, Chris Brady and Dale Reed to start the 25-lap Modified Hobby feature. Whitt got under Cook racing off the fourth turn on lap 5 to move into the lead, and up-on-the-wheel digging hard Emery passed Cook for the second spot on the sixth circuit between turns one and two. With slower traffic looming ahead at the flag stand to begin the ninth lap, Emery dropped down to the inside from running behind Whitt entering turn one to take the lead, as Whitt got trapped in behind a slower car being lapped. The top-four of Emery, Whitt, Cook and Brady had a...

A note from Joe Loven

Dale Ball said Saturday nights super race is the best race he has ever seen. He said the super lates when they qualified they turned the best time for any group that has come to The Gap all things considered. I appreciate Dale telling me that because I work very hard to make The Gap the best surface prepared track in the United States. I can make it fast or slow or moderate. One of these days I intend when we have a good group of late models to put 3 or 4 cars in the 11′s. We’ve had supers run in the 11′s on practice nights and have almost gotten them into the 11′s at a couple of big super shows we’ve had. If anyone would like to run, I would like to have another run what you brung race. If you drivers and fans that read this want a run what you brung we will do it pretty soon. I fool with this racetrack because I like good racing and when it gets to the point I can’t give the fans good racing and fast racing I will lock the gates and throw the keys away. I believe that I can get a super late model down to a 11:50. Boy, if I could it would make this racetrack worth more to me than I ever dreamed about. When you see Joe Loven down there getting the racetrack ready, he ain’t thinking about the money, or the seats he can sell, he is interested in putting the show on that he likes. I guess I have said enough. Watch for a change in our venue. Thank you, Joe ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After talking just a few minutes ago with Joe Loven on the phone, with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series running the Topless 100 at Batesville, Ark, on Aug. 17-18, Joe would like to have a Run What Ya Brung race at Volunteer Speedway on Tuesday, Aug. 21 paying $10,000-to-win. That will happen if enough interest is shown by racers. Contact phone numbers for the track are listed down below. Drivers/race teams will already have their tops off at Batesville, and a scheduled open practice night will take place anyway at “The Gap” on Wednesday, Aug. 22, leading up to Thursday’s Scorcher. So why not come in on Tuesday and run for $10,000-to-win in a Run What Ya Brung event? Why wouldn’t a Super Late Model driver/race team not want to be in East Tennessee and have opportunity to run for a possible $20,000-to-win over a couple of nights?
Ogle pockets $5,000 for Volunteer Speedway ‘Saturday Night Shootout 50’ Ultimate Super Late Model Series victory

Ogle pockets $5,000 for Volunteer Speedway ‘Saturday Night Shootout 50’ Ultimate Super Late Model Series victory By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (May 5) — A “super moon” was illuminating the nighttime skies over Volunteer Speedway for running of the Ultimate Super Late Model Series Saturday Night Shootout 50. Chad Ogle of Sevierville pulled the trigger and shot past Casey Roberts for the lead on lap 48 en route to claiming the $5,000 victory, the biggest Super Late Model win of his career. Chad Ogle began the night setting fast-time at 12.393 seconds (117.074 mph) to earn pole position for the 50-lap main event, while Billy Ogle Jr. laid down a time of 12.439 to claim the outside front row starting berth. Showing the way up front, it was the Ogle vs. Ogle show bringing the 24-car field to the green. “Billy the Kid” blasted ahead of Chad Ogle racing down the front straightaway into the first turn to take the lead, and up top in the banking between turns one and two, Roberts got around Chad Ogle for second, with Zack Mitchell and Brett Miller holding down the fourth and fifth spots in the running order on the opening lap. The first caution waved on lap 3 between turns one and two when Mark Vineyard, Bryan Hendrix and Jensen Ford all got together. The race ended early for both Hendrix and Ford, while Vineyard and Boles continued on with slight sheet-metal damage. Billy Ogle was all alone out front for the Ultimate Double File Restart, with Roberts and Chad Ogle lined up behind him side-by-side. Once again, Billy quickly rocketed back out to a comfortable lead over Roberts and Chad Ogle, while behind them action was fast-and-furious with drivers’ jockeying for position. Racing off turn two on lap 9, a disappointing end for racer leader Billy Ogle when the driveshaft (yoke) broke on his car and he coasted down the backstretch and stayed up high between turns three and four to bring the caution out. Roberts moved to the point, followed by Ogle, Mitchell, Ray Cook and Miller. Before one lap could be completed, Ogle and Mitchell tangled between turns one and two, which forced all cars behind them into evasive action. Travis Greer and David Watts spun at exit of turn two to bring the yellow (flag) back out. Following the dual cautions at lap 9, during the first half of the race two additional caution periods slowed the pace. And on each double-file restart, cars behind the front-runners battled two- and three-wide for position back through the field around the high-banked 4/10-mile oval. Things began to settle down somewhat just past the mid-point in the 50-lapper, when Roberts, Ogle, Cook, Dale McDowell, and NASCAR K&N Pro Series competitor Ryan Gifford occupied the top five spots in the running order. With the lead pack rim-riding around the upper groove in the turns, on several occasions Ogle tried sticking his nose underneath Roberts. But...

Ball, Whitt, James visit Volunteer Speedway victory lane

Ball, Whitt, James visit Volunteer Speedway victory lane By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (April 14) — A somber mood at Volunteer Speedway for the weekly racing program Saturday, with track owner Phyllis Loven’s father having passed away from extended illness on Friday. But the scheduled show must go on, and following a brief moment of silence, prayer and national anthem, fans were treated to an exciting racing program on the high banks. Three-time (2008, 2010, 2011) Fastrak Racing Series-sanctioned Pro Late Model champion Dale Ball of Johnson City, qualified on the pole position for the 35-lap headlining event and grabbed the lead at the start and never looked back en route to leading flag-to-flag for his first victory on the season. While Ball, driving the Smith Brothers Harley-Davidson of Johnson City/Kerry Jones Trucking – Bigfoot Enterprises/Luke’s Pizza of Johnson City/Alan Poyner Enterprises/Jim Schweitzer Inc./Mainline Communications/Twin D Auto & Truck Sales of Johnson City/Advance Auto Parts/Envy Suspension & Race Consultants/VP Racing Fuels/Steve Williams Enterprises/Warrior Race Cars/No. 2 Chevrolet Impala, was in command throughout the race, behind him competitors’ battled for real estate until the waving of the checkered flag. But there was no denying the 51-year-old Ball his first win, with John Tweed, Vic Chandler, Tim Byrd and Jerry Broyles rounding out the top-five at the finish. Completing the top-10 finishers were Brad Coffey, Ricky Moore, John Harrell, Todd Brooks and Greg Burchett. Jesse Helton jumped into the lead over Wise, Va.’s Jamie Whitt at start of the 25-lap Modified Hobby feature and led the opening 14 circuits before a broken transmission parked him in the pits. With a clear track out front for two-time defending division champion Whitt, driving the B&D Repair/Baldwin Filters/Iron Horse Race Cars/No. 1 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, he pulled away to easily capture his second straight win over Jon Cook, Dennis Metcalf, Robbie Woods and Chuck Kilian. Having grown up as a young boy attending racing at Volunteer Speedway watching both his grandfather (Danny James) and father (Wayne James) win many races over the years, along with track championships, Tyler James of Cosby could only dream about someday being able to write his name in the record book as a third-generation “James Gang” racer to visit victory lane at The Gap. The dreams became reality when Tyler, driving the Dave’s Roofing/Lane’s Market/West Haven Speed Equipment/No. 420 ride outran Ron Lawson, Jeff Akard and Wayne James to capture his first-ever Open Wheel Modified feature win – a night the 19-year-old will always remember.
Maupin, Flanary, Whitt visit Volunteer Speedway victory lane on ‘East Tennessee Masonry Night at the Races’

Maupin, Flanary, Whitt visit Volunteer Speedway victory lane on ‘East Tennessee Masonry Night at the Races’ By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (April 7) — With a full moon shining over Volunteer Speedway and the crowd bundled up on a cool night in East Tennessee, weekly racing began Saturday with East Tennessee Masonry Night at the Races. Tim Maupin of Johnson City captured his first-ever Fastrak Racing Series-sanctioned Pro (Crate) Late Model feature win, while Shon Flanary of Mount Carmel recorded the Open Wheel Modified victory, with defending two-time Modified Hobby track champion Jamie Whitt of Wise, Va., kicking the season off with a visit to victory lane. With the track in perfect condition, wet-and-tacky and hooked-up, John Tweed wrote his name in the record books by touring the high banks at 13.071 seconds (111.104 mph) to establish a new Pro Late Model track qualifying record. Tweed’s fast-lap lowered the previous record of 13.192 seconds which Jerry Broyles established on Sept. 4, 2010. Besides Tweed, both Broyles and Dale Ball were faster than Broyles’ old time. Following two bad starts attempting to get the 35-lap Pro Late Model feature started, both Tweed and Broyles were relegated back to the second row, with row two of Ball and Mike Smith moving to the front row. With Smith’s engine suffering from fuel pressure problems, he was forced into the pits, thus moving Broyles back up to the front row beside Ball for the start. Ball and Broyles brought the field to green and raced side-by-side down the front straightaway into the first turn, but carrying momentum on the high-side Broyles rolled into the lead racing off (turn) two down the backstretch. Broyles led Ball, Tweed, Maupin and Chris Chandler back around to the stripe completing the opening lap. With Ball pressuring Broyles for the point, between turns three and four on the seventh lap, Ball nearly got into the back of Broyles and almost spun his machine – thus allowing both Maupin and Tweed to drive by before getting his mount reeled in. Caution waved on lap 13, when leader Broyles had a left-rear wheel break off his car, sending him spinning between turns one and two. Maupin was riding all alone out front for the Volunteer Double File Restart, with Ball and Tweed door-to-door behind him. Back up to speed Maupin quickly began to set sail over his teammate Ball and Tweed, while behind them Chandler, Tim Byrd, Ricky Moore, Todd Brooks, Brad Coffey, Vic Chandler and John Harrell were racing hard battling for real estate. After earning rookie of the year honors last season and finishing sixth in points with several top-five runs, it was only a matter of time before the 28-year-old Maupin, a former professional ATV racer with multiple championships to his credit, would capture his first-ever dirt late model victory. With 10 laps remaining, Maupin, driving the Smith Brothers Harley-Davidson of Johnson City/Kerry Jones Trucking – Bigfoot Enterprises/Luke’s Pizza of Johnson City/Alan Poyner...

2011 Tennessee State NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion Nate Monteith tests asphalt Late Model Stock at Volunteer Speedway

2011 Tennessee State NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion Nate Monteith tests asphalt Late Model Stock at Volunteer Speedway By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (March 29) — Getting the ball rolling for the “big” asphalt Late Model Stock event scheduled later in the fall, 2011 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Kingsport Speedway and Tennessee State NASCAR champion Nate Monteith, from Blountville, tested his No. 4 Chevrolet Impala on the high banks at Volunteer Speedway Thursday afternoon. Joe Loven, who owns both Volunteer Speedway and Kingsport Speedway, has tossed the idea around for a few years now of having a special event featuring asphalt Late Model Stock racing at “The Gap.” Plans are currently underway to decide on a fall race date, once asphalt tracks in the Volunteer State, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina have finished their racing seasons. “This is going to be a big deal,” said Loven while at the track Thursday evening. “I’m going to pay good money, at least $5,000-to-win and $500-to-start, and who knows – I might even bump it up to $10,000-to-win. I initially wanted to try having this event during the recent Bristol Motor Speedway racing weekend, but the more I thought about it and after talking with several racers interested in running this event, it’s best to wait until later this fall once all the asphalt tracks have finished their racing season. I’m wanting to make this event economical for the racers to come race, and they won’t have to buy tires because all cars will be required to race on used tires (Goodyear or Hoosier), tires that they’ve raced on during the season at their home-track. “Hey, there’s no reason why this asphalt Late Model Stock race on dirt won’t work – and this test with Nate (Monteith) running his car proved it will work. These Late Model Stock cars are very similar (weight-wise) with our Modified Hobby class of cars, and those guys really put on a good show every week here at the track. Look at the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA), they run twice each year on dirt and it’s a great show. We’ve got several months to spread the word around Tennessee, Virginia and the Carolinas to let Late Model Stock racers know about this event, and it’s going to be a ‘must-see’ race. You don’t want to miss being in attendance.” The 30-year-old Monteith is looking forward to getting race on the famed high banks. “I’m telling you, it was awesome finally getting to turn some laps around this place after coming down here hanging out in the pits over the years with buddies of mine who race dirt Late Models,” said Monteith following the test. “We were just running laps today on basically worn-out tires with lots of laps on them, yet we were getting around here at a pretty good pace. I applaud track owner Joe Loven for wanting to stage a race like this. Because to my knowledge, I...

McDowell rolls to Volunteer Speedway $10,000 ‘Spring Thaw’ victory

McDowell rolls to Volunteer Speedway $10,000 ‘Spring Thaw’ victory By Robert Walden Volunteer Speedway Media/Public Relations BULLS GAP, Tenn. (March 17) — Volunteer Speedway opened its 39th year of exciting dirt-track racing before one of its largest crowds ever Saturday night, with a stellar field of some of the country’s top Super Late Model racers present for running of the $10,000-to-win 11th Annual Spring Thaw. With legendary NASCAR race team owner Richard Childress in attendance watching grandson Ty Dillon, Dale McDowell and Richard Childress Racing Camping World Truck Series driver Joey Coulter wheel their RCR Team Dillon Racing machines, Childress couldn’t have been more pleased with the results. McDowell won the Super Late Model main event while Coulter, making his first-ever start at “The Gap,” visited victory lane in winning the Fastrak Racing Series-sanctioned Pro Late Model feature. Following RCR Nationwide Series driver Elliot Sadler winning earlier in the day at nearby Bristol Motor Speedway, the trio of chauffeurs pulled off the trifecta for Childress. McDowell, from Chickamauga, Ga., set fast-time (13.078 seconds – 110.114 mph) in qualifying to earn the $300 Martin’s Roofing Service pole award. He launched into the lead at drop of the green and never looked back en route to a flag-to-flag romp to victory in the Spring Thaw 60. “Hey, this is what it’s all about – having fun racing and getting the win,” said a smiling McDowell following his impressive Spring Thaw victory. “I’m not racing full-time with a series in 2012. It was just time to get away from the deal of traveling all over the country racing for points. We’re just going to go run races occasionally and when we show up, we’ll show up with intentions of running strong and winning.” McDowell and Scott Bloomquist led the 22-car field to green from the front row, with McDowell grabbing the lead over five-time Volunteer Speedway Super Late Model track champion Vic Hill, followed by Bloomquist, Ray Cook and Mark Vineyard to complete the opening lap. McDowell was setting a blistering pace around the high banks, quickly putting distance between his Ferris Commercial Mowers/Klotz Synthetic Lubricants/YouAreHollywood.com/Cometic Gasket/Xinergy/WTW Enterprises/Earnhardt Childress Racing Engines/Warrior Race Cars/Team Dillon Racing/No. 17m Chevrolet Impala and his closest challengers. While battles for position back through the field were taking place, out front McDowell was in command as he held right at a full-straightaway advantage over Hill, Bloomquist and Cook halfway into the 60-lap Spring Thaw. Defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion Jimmy Owens, who was relegated to a 13th-place starting position after getting into the first turn a little too fast on his qualifying lap and getting up against the outside guardrail, was steadily working his way forward. Owens got around John Blankenship for seventh on lap 31 racing off the fourth turn, and just one circuit later he passed Billy Ogle Jr. to move into sixth in the running order. The event’s only caution flag waved on lap 34 when Ellery Leake spun in the fourth turn....
